Acquired Tastes, Part I

Acquired Tastes is a series of collage works that explore influence, consumption, and desire. These works are made with found materials from cookbooks and bougie food magazines. I precisely excised all traces of food, replacing the voids with carefully selected and arranged pairings that allude to both our carnal and corporeal appetites. The work investigates the inordinate fetishization of food and how consumption – along with other forms of excessive material acquisition – can serve as a proxy for being in touch with one’s more deeply felt feelings, wants, and needs. This series ponders the extent to which one is turned on to their own desires and to what extent they interpret and act on desires engineered through the social, cultural, and economic lenses imposed upon them.
